How To Green Screen in Photography Using Free Tools

How to green screen in photography? Green screen or chroma key allows you to photograph a subject against a green or blue background and replace that background with a digital backdrop of your choice. It really is the easiest and less expensive way to put your subject against any backdrop you want without spending a fortune for expensive backdrops. You can do this with existing quality software that doesn't cost you anything at all.

The first application you will want to get is paint.net. This is a free photo editor that rivals some of the more expensive photo editing software packages out there. You can use it for all of your photo editing tasks or if you prefer, just use it to remove the green or blue background and replace it with a background of your choice.

Paint.net will not do chroma keying "out of the box" though. You will need to download the Chroma key plugin from the Paint.net plugins available for Paint.net. This will allow you to do green screen for free. You will now have all of the tools needed to do quality chroma key replacement in your hands and it didn't cost you a dime.

The next thing you will need is some type of green backdrop to use as a backdrop for your portrait photos. You can buy one of the many available green chroma key backdrops from places like eBay or Amazon for less than forty bucks or you can make your own with green poster board. You can also buy chroma key paint and paint a wall with it if you want a chroma key permanent studio.

The software also allows you to do blue screen chroma key also so you do not have to create just a green screen. You can also do a blue screen. Why would I use one over the other? If you have a subject that shows up wearing something green, you will want to use a blue screen background. If they are wearing something blue, use a green screen background. If they are wearing colors that contain no blue or green, then you are free to use which ever chroma key color (green or blue) backdrop you want to.

Remember also to keep your subject a few feet away from your backdrop so the color from the backdrop does not reflect onto your subject's skin. Make sure you light your backdrop evenly also for best results.

So to sum it up, download paint.net photo editing tool and also download the chroma key plugin for Paint.net, setup a green backdrop and you are all set to do green screen at no cost to you for the software.
